Another word we could use instead of Being is Passion. Passion has the same root word as passive. Passions act upon us and we find it difficult to resist.

God places passions within our soul. These are good and we feel fulfilled when we express those passions. Maybe it is the passion to care, the passion to be creative, the passion to do gardening, etc.

Our flesh also imposes passions upon us, and these need to be resisted. Incorrectly indulging these passions lead us away from being faithful to God.

Great article / thanks for writing it.

I really like this distinction between spiritual and bodily passions—expressing one and resisting or tempering the other. It's something I didn't think to consider. I may write a Part 2 to this article to explore that. Unless you want to write about it. It's your idea lol

You go for it. I’m going to write a series on what is the spirit/soul/mind/body/flesh and the Biblical distinction between them later in the year. I’ll write a little bit on the difference between the passions, but I’m not going to focus on it. The way we see the ‘person’ is so different to the ancients. It’s mind-bending. 😃👍🏽

Let me know when you write that because I would like actively direct people to it. It sounds like a great article that could really be fruitful for others.

Great Post, thanks. The big game changer for me in recent years has been understanding myself so much better and not putting myself in situations to which I am not suited. Authenticity is so important.

Authenticity is very important.

It’s been used by Post-Modern philosophers as a criticism of the Modern World. Communist writers also call for people to show their ‘authentic-self’, which by this, I think they mean ‘Social Man’.

In contrast, authenticity for a Christian is to show Christ.

Indeed. I think for me it is a little different. I belatedly realised I have some autistic qualities and what I was doing, largely unconsciously, was adapting myself to fit in with those around me. Short version of that long story - it doesn't end well. So for me, the first step was to learn to drop the mask, begin to live as my truest and deepest self and only then could I learn about what it means to be a Christian. It's taken me many years...

You have “being” framed exactly there! Keep doing what you’re doing. Thanks for reading the article and for the comment. It’s good for people to “hear” about the experiences of others.
